Review of UpWork.com, the Freelance Hiring Platform

Today, I am very excited to be reviewing Upwork.com, the Freelance Recruitment Platform that used to be oDesk.com

What exactly is Upwork.com?

Upwork.com is basically a platform that connects freelancers to employers.

The real value is that you can see all the reviews and feedback from previous clients as well as their portfolio. Upwork.com even offers many tests that freelancers can perform, so you really know if they are as good as they claim to be.

How can I hire freelancers through Upwork.com?

The process of hiring freelancers on Upwork.com is pretty simple. Let’s say you are a small business owner or web entrepreneur and need someone to help you with your WordPress site. You would go and write a job description on their platform, and within minutes, freelancers from all over the world would apply to your job post.

You can hire someone for a fixed-price project or on a hourly rate.

My tip: If your requirements are not fixed and you know lots of things are going to change a long the way ( let’s say you want someone to customize your existing site ), go for the hourly rate.

If you are able to define everything upfront and come up with a clear requirement doc upon hiring, fixed price projects are usually the way to go.

What makes Upwork.com so special?

I usually Upwork all the time. In fact, most of my team is being remotely managed through their platform. What i really enjoy the most is the fact that you do not need to worry about getting your staff paid since it’s all being taken care through Upwork.

You get access to the Work Diary, which has screenshots from the actual work your team is doing. Well, in general, you should be able to trust your team without controlling their screen, but it’s pretty handy once in a while to look into what freelancers are doing. It’s always a good instrument to give feedback and improve work flows.

Also, I really appreciate the quick hiring process. It’s basically a 1-click process once you know who you want to work with.

To sum it up

It does not really matter if you want to hire a freelancer for a specific task or if you want to find long term virtual work force: on Upwork.com, you can quickly find freelancers and setup all the infrastructure to get things done. It’s obviously your part of the equation to make sure what they are doing, and how they are doing is up to your standard. But the platform itself is really well organized and feature-rich.

If you have questions about Upwork.com, feel free to leave a comment and I am more than happy to help.

Good luck with hiring,
